Night Sky in ABTS
"What are we going to do today?" I thought I heard my Teddy say.

Bears Down Under®

I searched and searched but found it quite difficult to locate the place where I was to meet Vanessa deVinet. I walked up and down a very long fence line at the designated coordinates, but was unable to find anything that resembled a gate or even a gap in the old fence. I rested beneath a blooming wattle tree; shed a few tears (out of frustration) for being unable to find the entrance (see photo). Finally, I collected myself, and made another attempt. I walked over a timber bridge, beneath a canopy of trees, right along the uneven fence line, I finally noticed a very tiny opening and saw a bit of pink on the other side. At last, after hours of searching I found a very well hidden opening.
I gently tapped on the rustic gate, it opened ever so slowly
with a low creak. What first beheld my eyes was a fantastic
hidden forest of dense eucalyptus trees and Vanessa deVinet.
“Hello Professor PJ, welcome to the entrance of Arktos-By-The-Sea. You’re right on time!” I expressed my dismay at how I could have missed the gate after spending hours searching. She stated “the entrance is a kind of portal that only appears in the fence when a Bear Down Under is on the other side.” Oh this was even more mysterious than I ever expected. Portals to another place only happen in fantasy books and video games. But this was no game and no fantasy.
Vanessa promptly got to the point of our meeting. “You’ll need
this.” She handed me a metal object with rusty swirls and faded
green leaves. It looked quite heavy but when I picked it up it was
as light as a piece of paper.

She continued, “It will help you navigate Arktos-By-The-Sea, it’s a type of compass/sextant. It can be used as a compass in the daytime and a sextant at night or on water. You’ll need it to find your way around this dense bush (forest). The map I gave you last time was just to let you see that ABTS does exist, but when you are on this side of the fence this is your map and compass. She also handed me a slim black box. Vanessa went on, “I had a meeting with ALL the Bears Down Under, and it was unanimously agreed that you would be the one to gather the pages of an Ancient Book and compile
them into one volume – they are to be kept in this box as you collect them. Every Bear has two or more pages of this book, which each will give to you when you meet them.” Vanessa seemed to read my mind as I was about to ask about the book...
“The Ancient Book tells the story of Arktos-By-The-Sea (ATBS) and each of the Bears Down Under (BDU). It was written long ago by someone we dearly loved, but who is no longer with us. Before he left us he gave each bear their respective pages (their story from the book) and he instructed them to keep the pages safe until a "kindred bear" from a far away land arrived. The Bears Down Under ALL agreed we would allow this bear from afar to enter our land. But first, this bear would have to be tested and if the tests were passed then we would know she was indeed ‘the one.’ That bear, we all agreed, is YOU, Professor Piaget (PJ for short).”
I was a little emotional and teary as Vanessa told me this story. My original plan was just to study the bears for scientific purposes, but now I found I had a much more important responsibility - to get the story of Arktos-By-The-Sea and the Bears Down Under revealed. They must have something very important to tell the world.
“You’ve already been given one page from the book, the Letter from the
Arch-Archon Archibald. And I shall give you these next 4 pages, my story and the story of how we got here. Yes, Professor PJ, I am indeed one of the Bears Down Under. You most likely will not receive the pages in numerical order, so this black box is where you can keep the pages safe until you have them all, it doesn’t require a key but only you will be able to open it. As you wander about our land you will meet the Bears – and they are ALL looking forward to meeting you.”
“Well, the hour is late so you must be on your way. We have a place for you to stay while you are here, it’s the Lighthouse, since we know it’s a place you’ve always wished to live.” “How did you know that?” I asked Vanessa. She replied, “The one who wrote the Ancient Book told us a great deal about you.”
I took the map/compass/sextant in hand and the slim black box, Vanessa pointed me in the right direction and off I went. After several hours, I found the Lighthouse, and climbed the winding stairs to the top. I took off my cape and pondered all that had transpired.
What a mission – an Ancient Book (I now have 5 pages of
an unknown total), about a land (Arktos-By-The-Sea), and
inhabitants (Bears Down Under) that have an important
message for the world. My work, nay my quest, continues.
